"music to heal the globe"
Maikel Garcia is a Cuban-born saxophonist, composer, educator, and bandleader based in the San Francisco Bay Area. With Bachelor’s degrees in both musical performance and music education at conservatories in Santiago de Cuba, Maikel is known for his complex, expressive, and innovative improvisational style.
Raised in a home filled with bossa nova, classical music, and Afro-Cuban rhythms, Maikel developed a sound that blends jazz, Latin roots, funk, Afro-urban influences, and contemporary world music. His work also explores alternative vibration-based tonal frequencies, creating therapeutic and healing music, as heard in his album Life.
Maikel’s musical journey has taken him from Cuba to Belize, Ecuador, Mexico, and the United States, where he currently lives on the coast of California. As a soloist and bandleader of M Project, he has performed with Cuban legends including Chuchito Valdés, Carlos Perrote, and Jorge Triana.
His recent projects include From Cero, an Afro-urban infused album telling stories of struggle, resilience, and success; Life, a frequency-based therapeutic music project designed to support physical and emotional healing; and multiple film scores, including the multi-award-winning documentary Truth Be Told: Irving Norman and the Human Predicament. He has also composed original commercial and promotional music for organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, and Europe.
In addition to his recording, film and commercial work, Maikel has been the Musical Teaching Artist in the Expressive Arts program at Caminar in the Bay Area for nearly a decade, using therapeutic music to help individuals process trauma, develop positive coping skills, and recover from mental health crises.
"Maikel's music is profoundly beautiful. He lives his art and his music reflects the inner-soul of each of us."
